OFFICIAL: Crystal Palace sign Adebayor

Crystal Palace have signed free agent Emmanuel Adebayor on a six-month contract.

The Togo international was released by Tottenham in September and has been without a club since, but has now signed a deal with the Eagles until the end of the season.

Palace boss Alan Pardew has made clear his desire to sign a striker this month and the club have also been linked with the likes of Nicklas Bendtner, Loic Remy and Emmanuel Emenike.

Palace’s only goal in their last six Premier League games was an own goal scored by Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen on Saturday.

Adebayor was reportedly close to joining Aston Villa in the summer but was eventually let go by Spurs having failed to find a new club, and has not played since May 3 of last year.

The former Arsenal and Real Madrid player will wear the No.25 shirt at Selhurst Park.

Emmanuel Adebayor leaves Tottenham as contract cancelled

Emmanuel Adebayor has been released from his contract with Tottenham Hotspur by mutual agreement.

Adebayor, 31, had fallen completely out of favour at White Hart Lane and had not been included in the club’s Premier League or Europa League squads, or given a squad number.

Proposed moves to Aston Villa and to West Ham United fell through during the transfer window..

Even if he had been reintegrated into the Spurs squad, he would only have been eligible to play for the club in the third, fourth and fifth rounds of the Capital One Cup before January.

Now he is left in limbo, as FIFA transfer rules state that a player must be a free agent when the transfer window closes to be allowed to register for another club before January,

A statement on Spurs’ official website on Sunday morning said: “We can confirm that we have reached a mutual agreement with Emmanuel Adebayor which will see him released from his contract with the club.

“We wish Emmanuel well for the future.”

The former Arsenal frontman had been on a Tottenham contract that ran until next summer. He has been with Spurs for four years, initially signing on loan from Manchester City for the duration of the 2011-12 season. He scored 18 goals in that campaign and made the switch permanent in the summer of 2012.

Last season — Mauricio Pochettino’s first in charge at Tottenham — Adebayor made only 17 appearances in all competitions, netting twice.

Adebayor was offered £245,000-a-week – more than DOUBLE his current deal – to leave for Qatar, says the Mirror.

The 30-year-old Togo international said: ”The transfer window was open for a month and we all knew what was happening. It didn’t all happen in 48 hours.

“The club decided to send me out on loan, which I was pleased with. There were five good clubs interested and I [narrowed it down to] three before choosing the one I wanted. But Mr Levy was against the one I chose, because it was a rival.

“But I’m very happy to stay at the club and do my job.”
